Test This Thursday – Oven Dried Strawberries

This week my favorite grocery store had strawberries for only 98 cents per pound! So, naturally, I bought a ton of them. One of the many ideas I had for using them was to try this “snack hack“. Oven dried strawberries! Supposedly they taste like candy! Who can resist the idea of taking this simple fruit and transforming it into a miracle treat! Especially when all it takes is a few hours of my time and my oven! I’ve never tried it before, and decided this would be the perfect opportunity. And I was excited to show you all this super easy way to make yourselves a sweet and healthy snack for Test This Thursday.

The method is simple, the post I found said to bake the strawberries at 210* for 3 hours. I preheated my oven for about 10 minutes, as is customary when baking anything. While I waited, I cut my strawberries each in half and laid them out on parchment paper lined cookie sheets. After rinsing and drying them with paper towels. Then I waited, and waited, and waited.

I checked on the berries every hour for the 3 hours. At the 1 hour mark they were starting to look dry on top and had a little bit of brown liquid on the paper around them. It looked a little like the juices and sugars were coming out of them and browning on the paper. I made a mental note that the berries may stick and need to be peeled off with a spatula.

At the 2 hour mark the strawberries themselves were starting to get very brown. When I poked at them they seemed like they were still soft and almost juicy on the inside, but a little crispy on the outside. I thought, these don’t look like those pretty, chewy looking berries I saw on Pinterest. I guess I’ll see how they turn out after the last hour.

Finally the 3 hour mark came, and they were done. And I really mean done. Here is what my finished berries look like:

They are dried out, that’s for sure. Black and burnt too. I couldn’t go without trying them though. I thought maybe they will still be a little chewy and candy like in the center. NOPE! It crunched when I bit into it, and tasted like coal. I couldn’t spit it out fast enough! Needless to say, I’m very disappointed. I wasted a pound of beautiful strawberries to end up with these inedible lumps.
