Welcome to another edition of Test This Thursday! Today the name of the game is Moon Sand. Home Made Moon Sand to be precise. Home made toys and activities for kids are really popular right now. Why buy play dough, slime and other squishy play things when you can make them yourself from things you already have at home? The money saving factor is obvious, but does it really work like the internet DIY-ers say it does? Let’s find out!
The recipe I found for Moon Sand called for 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil. I was reluctant to use 8 cups of flour for something I wasn’t sure would work, so I made 1/4 of the recipe for my experiment. After finding a good sized bowl to put it in, I mixed 2 cups of flour with 1/4 cup of baby oil. It took some mixing to get the oil incorporated all the way. When I poured it in it just wanted to soak into a little bit of the flour on top and make a paste. I stirred and squished it all together with a spoon at first, then got my hands dirty and mixed it more by hand.
You guys… This stuff is so soft! I think it may have moisturized my hands! So that is a plus for this activity. Now, flour naturally clumps together a little bit anyway, but the oil really helped it to stay together. I was able to use a sand toy mold to make a fish with the moon sand. I could also easily mold it with my hands into whatever shape I wanted.
The ultimate test, though, is whether the youngest King will enjoy it. At first he wasn’t sure. The texture of it seemed to be weird to him. After a couple minutes of poking at it, though, he dove right in and had a blast with it! Here is photo evidence of the progression of his testing:
