What’s in a name? Why are names important?
I think we all know what a name is, but for clarity, the definition of a name is “a word or a combination of words by which a person, place, or thing, a body or class, or any object of thought is designated, called, or known.”
Everything in our world has a name. People, pets, objects, emotions, places, and so on. We take great care when naming our children, knowing that their name becomes part of who they are. Names have meaning. My name for example, means “fair one.”
Names are kind of a big deal in the Bible. In Genesis 29:32 – 30:24 we read about Jacob’s children. The Bible records the births of each of his sons and why they were given their names. In the book of Ruth 1:20-21 Naomi changes her name to Mara, because the name Mara suited her better for that time in her life. John 1:42 Jesus changes Simon’s name to Peter, meaning “stone.”
The Bible also gives us several different names for God. Some of them He gives Himself, such as I Am, and the Alpha and the Omega. Other names people have given Him because of the attributes He showed them, such as El Olam (Everlasting God, Psalm 90:1-2) and El Roi (God who Sees, Genesis 16:13). God has so many names because there are so many different facets of who He is.
There is one name God the Father gave that is extra special. Philippians 2:9-10 says, ” Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.”
Jesus. The most highly exalted name there is. The name that all of heaven and earth, and everything else answers to. The most powerful and most beautiful name. Jesus.
The name of Jesus is greater than the name of mother, Pastor, or President. Jesus is the name above government, kingdom, manager, officer and spouse.
Our Lord Jesus is the name that ALL things must bow to! Our sins of lust, covetousness, theft, lying, gluttony, laziness, and all the rest have to submit to the name of Jesus! So do our fickle emotions; frustration, happiness, anger, sadness, amusement, boredom, etc etc.
Watch this. Even the names insecurity… addiction… pain… fear… illness… depression… anxiety… suicide and death… Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, EVERYTHING must bow to His name! All of our hardships, all of our struggles, every person in our life, all the authorities over us, none of them compare! Jesus is the name above all other names!
If that doesn’t give you hope this morning, nothing will! When we cling to Jesus, follow Him and are in Him, NONE of the other names in this world can come against us. He has already won the war! If our God is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?
No matter what you are dealing with right now, remember that it won’t last forever. One day all things that are not of God will fall away. Some issues may be stubborn and take longer, but everything will bow to the name of Jesus. Until you get there, Jesus is the one who is there to hold your hand through it all.
